“Intellectuals ponder, philosophize, interpret, and all this is essential to our shared experience, however, to feel the warmth of what lays at our feet within all that can be felt by the heart, is in an instant more powerful than mere words, we need to feel the words, capture the essence of what we see, and revel in the tastes of nature, and let ourselves allow our hearts to sing out loud, wild, and free.” ― Mark Donnelly
This quote describes Maya-Christina (29) who is a singer/songwriter from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She loves to make music in the Soul & Jazz style, and every now and then she takes a trip down the reggae road. Because of her South-American roots, she is adopted from Colombia; you will experience influences from Latin and Bossa Nova music. This gives a great variety in her repertoire.
Maya is an out-of-the-box person, she sings from her heart and the sound of her voice takes you back to old soul & jazz music. Her greatest inspirer is Nina Simone. She is also inspired by the following artists; Esperanza Spalding, Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu, Lianne La Havas, Selah Sue, Gregory Porter, D’Angelo, Emily King and Allen Stone.
The most important thing in Maya’s music and lyrics is that emotions are felt and heard, as well as passing a message. Maya finds Bob Marley inspiring because he is pure and real, some even call him a preacher. He touches people’s heart with music, voice and message and Maya’s music does the same.
Maya’s experience in music goes way back, she had been a back-up vocalist for well-known Dutch artists such as; Sharon Doorson, Candy Dulfer, Waylon, Sherry Dianne and Yuli Minguel. After these experiences she was ready for the next step, a solo career. She had the opportunity to share her passion for music on different stages. In 2015 she had her first international appearance on the beautiful Caribbean island, Curaçao.
Her interests go beyond vocal coaching, performing, fashion and healthy cooking. She also loves to write and record new songs and hopes to bring out her own album.
“She flies with her own wings,” applies to Maya like no other. Her biggest dream is to travel the world and to make music with the locals. It would be a privilege and an inspirational addition to her journey through her musical development.
